WHEN TO VISIT TANZANIA
THE BEST TIME TO VISIT SERENGETI IN TANZANIA
Because rainfall patterns are unpredictable in Tanzania, it is difficult to anticipate exact timings for the Serengeti migration and wildebeest calving season. The best time to visit depends on what you want to experience.
1. DRY SEASON (JULY TO OCTOBER)
This is the best time to witness the wildebeest migration river crossing. During these months the weather is dry, vegetation is sparse, animals congregate around rivers and water catchment areas, making it easy to spot them. It is also the best time to witness predator-prey interaction as Lions, Cheetahs and Leopards hunt more visibly.
2. WET SEASON (NOVEMBER – 15 DECEMBER)
The short rains in these months mark the beginning of the wildebeest calving. The Southern Serengeti plains become a maternity ward where over 500,000 wildebeest calves are born.
3. DECEMBER 15 TO MARCH
The short grass plains are what the southern Serengeti is famous for. The soils are fertile, supporting up to two million animals during the rainy season. December to March is the calving season where the zebras and wildebeests are calving on the plains of southern Serengeti (Ndutu area), offering dramatic wildlife experiences never to be forgotten. After the short rains of November, the grass on the plains becomes greener, attracting millions of wildebeests and zebras. It’s calving season. It’s the lion’s season!
3. RAINY SEASON (MAY – APRIL)
Heavy rains during this time make some of the roads impassable. Wildlife is more dispersed, so spotting animals can be more challenging, but the scenery is stunning and the parks are less crowded.
