10 DAYS SERENGETI WALKING SAFARI WITH CULTURAL EXPERIENCE

PRICE:  from $4 410 p/person sharing

Following the animal tracks discover the spring that never dries even at the hottest time of year, the small glades with the flush of sweet grass, the cave that the porcupine drags the old bones into. We will move slowly, resting under a cool overhang or the spreading branches of a fig tree. Walking safaris are not about covering distance; you will see less game on foot than you will from a vehicle but it’s about getting up close and personal to Africa, about using all your senses. The whole camp will be packed up and moved each day to a new site so that the walk has a true feeling of being a journey – in Swahili a ’safari’ – moving across the wilderness.

DAY 1: ARRIVAL AND TRANSFER TO ARUSHA

Upon your arrival at Kilimanjaro Airport, you will be met by one of our representatives. After a meet-and-greet you will be transferred to your hotel for your overnight stay.
Transit time to the lodge: 1 hour.

Accommodation: Mount Meru Game Lodge
Meals: Bed & breakfast
Drinks not included

DAY 2:  ARUSHA NATIONAL PARK

After breakfast drive to Arusha National Park for a guided walk with an armed ranger, and later proceed with a game drive. With only 137 square km, this park has more to see than many much larger national parks. Visit the great and small Momella lakes, and the forests that surround the Ngurdoto crater. This is the Small Serengeti where you might spot animals like giraffes, buffaloes, and families of baboons.
Transit time from the lodge to the park 20minutes.

Accommodation: Mount Meru Game Lodge
Meals: All meals included
Drinking water 1.5 litres (other drinks not included)

DAY 3:  ARUSHA TO TARANGIRE NATIONAL PARK

After the breakfast transfer to Tarangire National Park for your game drive. Despite the relative secrecy of Tarangire, during the dry season it is part of the migratory movement, and is second only to Ngorongoro Crater in concentration of wildlife. The Tarangire river and Silalei swamp provide water all year round, which attracts a large number of animals during the dry season. This park is much more densely wooded than Serengeti with acacia, mixed woodland, and the ubiquitous baobab. Overnight inside the park. At night proceed with night game drive for 2 hrs.
Transit time approx. 3hrs.

Accommodation: Tarangire Safari Lodge
Meals: All meals included
Drinking water 1.5 litres (other drinks not included)

DAY 4:  TARANGIRE NATIONAL PARK TO MTO WA MBU TO KARATU

After breakfast enjoy a morning game en route from Tarangire National park to Mto wa Mbu village. Upon arrival you will enjoy a bicycle tour around Mto wa Mbu village, visit the local market and the Manyara Lake shore. Afterwards enjoy a local lunch. Late afternoon drive to your lodge for overnight.

Accommodation: Ngorongoro forest lodge
Meals: All meals included
Drinking water 1.5 litres (other drinks not included)

DAY 5:  KARATU TO NGORONGORO CRATER

Today after breakfast we drive to Ngorongoro crater for a morning crater tour, followed by 2hrs of walking in the afternoon on the rim of the Ngorongoro crater, accompanied by an armed ranger . With an area of 250 square km, it was formed due to a volcanic collapse. Now it is a self-sustained ecosystems which supports the largest population of animals. The scenery at the crater floor is astonishing. Overnight inside the park.

Accommodation: Kuhama Ngorongoro Camp
Meals: All meals included
Drinking water 1.5 litres (other drinks not included)

DAY 6:  NGORONGORO TO SERENGETI NATIONAL PARK

After breakfast you will drive to the Serengeti National Park. On your way to Serengeti you’ll visit the archeological sites and museum of Oldupai George ‘’The cradled of humankind”. Then proceed to Serengeti for the afternoon and evening game drive.
Transit time approx. 3hrs

Accommodation: Pembezoni Tented Camp
Meals: All meals included
Drinking water 1.5 litres (other drinks not included)

DAY 7:  SERENGETI NATIONAL PARK

Leaving the security of the game viewing tracks we head off-road into the wilderness walking areas. These areas have not been visited for nearly fifty years except by the occasional ranger patrol. They offer a view of the Serengeti as it was, un-marred by game viewing tracks and lodges. The drive in through the wilderness is two to three hours, depending on the game. We break the journey with a bush picnic, before pushing on to camp. Once in camp we can go for a late afternoon orientation walk once the heat has subsided. Here we are the intruders, and we must learn to blend in if we are to get the full benefit of our visit. Overnight and full board in the African Environments Wilderness Camp.

Accommodation: Pembezoni Tented Camp
Meals: All meals included
Drinking water 1.5 litres (other drinks not included)

DAY 8 – 9:  SERENGETI NATIONAL PARK

Two full days of walking, wandering amongst the towering rock kopjes that dot the landscape and unlocking the secrets of this magical area. Following the animal tracks we discover the spring that never dries, even at the hottest time of year, the small glades with the flush of sweet grass, and the cave that the porcupine drags the old bones into.

We will move slowly, resting under a cool overhang or the spreading branches of a fig tree. Walking safaris are not about covering distance; you will see less game on foot than you will from a vehicle but it’s about getting up close and personal to Africa, about using all your senses. It’s amazing how the distinctive smell of a buffalo can set your heart racing! The whole camp will be packed up and moved each day to a new site so that the walk has a true feeling of being a journey – in Swahili a ’safari’ – moving across the wilderness.

Accommodation: Camping
Meals: All meals included
Drinking water 1.5 litres (other drinks not included)

DAY 10:  SERENGETI NATIONAL PARK TO SERONERA AIRSTRIP AND ONWARD

Up before dawn, a quick cup of coffee and a biscuit in the Mess tent then out into the first rays of the sun to try and track down the last of the night’s action. This is the time the animals are dropping their guard and can often be viewed before making their way into deeper cover as the sun rises higher.

Later in the walk perhaps you will ‘stumble’ upon a sumptuous surprise Bush Breakfast. A short walk back to camp to pack and load up into the vehicles for our game drive out of the Wilderness Area, another fantastic game viewing opportunity. This is the end of this four-day walking itinerary.
Drive to Seronera airstrip for your flight to Kilimanjaro airport or fly to Zanzibar for your holiday extension.
